Hamstring injuries are common in sport and physical activity that involve sudden explosive movements, such as in sprinting.
The hamstrings consist of 3 large muscles, the Semimembranosus, Semitendinosus, and Biceps Femoris.
Hamstring injuries can be categorised simply as:
- Grade 1: Mild pull or strain
- Grade 2: Partial muscle tear
- Grade 3: Complete muscle tear
Or in more detail, outlined by British Athletics Muscle Injury Classification

Hamstring Rehabilitation Here are a selection exercises we use in the middle phase of hamstring rehab. The main focus here is building strength with higher intensity and weight. Aim for 3-4 sets of 6-8 reps, 2-3 per week. The decision to progress from early phase to middle phase is dependant on the severity of injury, which will somewhat dictate timelines but also strongly driven from criteria and pain. #rehabilitation #osteopathy #physiotherapy
